Slow Animations… !
writing sample:
I make these animations/films as a way to test the radical imaginary when faced with an audience conditioned by PTSD at the hands of Covid-19 for example. I am exploring why slowing down actually heals us and makes us feel good inside. The same is true for the use of light and bright colors in these works. Why do such engagements shift one’s mood and even sense of self and time? How can the drama be as powerful as words in such occasions?
I wrote this about my film “little sunsets mending hearts”: “I create animations from the paintings I have developed over the past few years. The layered detritus of capitalism, they are all recycled from one another, and from works I often discard. They are made on a glitchy version of Photoshop and After Effects and edited in Premier Pro. This work is reflective of Dan Flavin’s light pieces and Rothko, and Minimalist like Brice Marden's paintings, as I present an image of my heart to the audience. I made the paintings from photographic memory during the Covid-19 Pandemic. I am interested in the transference of the painting and the light of the painting to the screen and the development of the animations based on chance operations. Every frame is the same length but gives the illusion of a change in time much like music. Similarly, I pick every image mostly randomly and sometimes look up an image. The sequence becomes a series and finds its place in a diversity that is still a repertoire. Most importantly the work is silent and the cinema is the space of 4’33”, when confronted by the pallet of the cinema and its animation.”
